If you like your movies black, thought provoking, and hilariously funny, you will relish this audacious, irreverent satire that delves deep into the bowels of Russian politics and picks off the scabs. The film is also painfully close to the bone in a world where once again the lunatics have taken over the asylum. It’s not for everyone, but for those who appreciate outrageous satire, there is a lot to be gained and all the risks pay off.

This subtle yet powerful film presents an empathetic and colourful look at childhood amid poverty set in the shadow of the imagined utopia of Disney World. Supported by her rebellious young mother, who must explore increasingly risky means to survive, and the motel manager, played masterfully by Willem Dafoe, Brooklyn Prince’s award-winning portrayal of an ebullient six-year-old is a poignant and unforgettable celebration of life. A unique, deeply humane film that overflows with euphoria and sadness.

Most people remember Hedy Lamarr as the spectacularly beautiful, exotic seductress of 1940s Hollywood films. But she had an additional asset: she was brilliant. During WWII she co-invented a radio communication technique that would eventually play a role in future Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and cellphone technologies. Presented in this award-winning documentary through recently discovered recordings, Lamarr comes across as a determined feminist who did nothing by halves, whether it was escaping Nazi repression or tasking Howard Hughes’ engineers.

The Dissociates takes a darkly comic look at life and death, memory and healing. It is the story of Alex, a 50ish lesbian dealing with the aftermath of a recent crisis. Working in her garden, she tries to assess how she got where she is. As she repairs her garden, six dissociated aspects of her personality join her to comment, help, and hinder her progress. Alex neither sees nor hears them. A story about courage, strength, and facing life. janetleahodgk@gmail.com
